A regeneração óssea se faz cada vez mais necessária com o advento do dos implantes ósseointegrados tanto do aspecto funcional como estético, onde cirurgias perimplantares restauradores tem sido mais exigida, para isto o estudo de técnicas e materiais de enxertia ósseas com boa previsibilidade e menor desconforto ao paciente tem sido desenvolvidos. No caminho desta evolução onde se pode optar desde o enxerto autógeno considerado o "padrão ouro", passando para os biomateriais e os homólogos também, surgiram as proteínas morfogenéticas que tem evoluído com bons resultados clínicos. Trata-se de uma proteína com potencial osteoindutor que pode ser reproduzida por recombinação do DNA. A mesma BMP descoberta por Urist em 1965, já é sintetizada e comercializada através do processo de recombinação - rhBMP2. Compreender quando manipular a via de diferenciação de células com a aplicação de doses únicas ou múltiplas de BMPs na concentração adequada é necessário para otimizar o efeito da cicatrização de feridas periodontais. O objetivo deste trabalho por meio de revisão de literatura é trazer mais informações a respeito da aplicação destas proteínas na clínica diária.
