Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar qualitativamente as próteses totais superiores e inferiores e sua relação com a autopercepção da saúde bucal em idosos de Passo Fundo - RS. Com o aumento da expectativa de vida da população; a relação entre o avanço da idade e aumento das perdas dentárias juntamente com a necessidade do uso de próteses dentárias, e a influência destas próteses na qualidade de vida do idoso, tal estudo se torna deveras pertinente. A pesquisa foi realizada através de um questionário de autopercepção, segundo o Índice GOHAI em que os idosos classificaram como sentem a sua saúde bucal, respondendo a 11 questões de ordem psicosocial, física e de dor/desconforto. E de uma avaliação das Próteses Totais, de acordo com o Índice de Nevalainen, em que as próteses são avaliadas em critérios como retenção, estabilidade, dimensão vertical, oclusão e articulação. A amostra da pesquisa foi de 60 idosos participantes dos grupos DATI (Departamento de Atenção a Terceira Idade) na cidade de Passo Fundo-RS. Após análise dos resultados, a média do Índice GOHAI foi de 25, mostrando uma baixa autopercepção dos participantes em relação à saúde bucal. Neste trabalho, o termo "baixa autopercepção" significa que os idosos classificaram como insatisfatória a sua saúde bucal.Independente da qualidade, da idade das próteses e do tempo em que iniciaram o uso das mesmas, os voluntários tiveram baixa autopercepção de saúde bucal. A diferença mostrada pela análise dos dados, em relação à estabilidade e à retenção das próteses entre as arcadas superior e inferior, não influenciou nos valores do Índice GOHAI.

This work aims to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the upper and lower dentures and its relationship with the self-perception of oral health in elderly in Passo Fundo-RS. With the increase in life expectancy and the large number of elderly people in our society who need dentures, this study becomes very relevant. Due to the fact that the more aged, the greater the edentulous people indexes, one can associate the aging of the Brazilian population to the need of wearing dentures also regarding the influence of these prosthetics in the elderly people's quality of life. Long periods without adequate prosthetics or with inadequate prostheses cause increasing difficulties in swallowing, chewing and speech. The research was conducted through a questionnaire of self-perception, according to the GOHAI index, in which senior subjects classified how they feel their oral health, responding to 11 psychosocial questions involving physical and pain/discomfort. And also an assessment of total joint replacements, according to the Nevalainen index, in which dentures are evaluated on criteria such as retention, stability, vertical dimension, occlusion and articulation. The research sample was 60 elderly participants of groups DATI (Elderly Care Department). After the result analysis, the GOHAI index average was 25, showing a low self-perception of the participants in relation to their oral health. In this paper, the term "low self-perception" means that the elderly people classified their oral health as unsatisfactory. Regardless of the quality or age of their prostheses and the length of time they wear them, the subjects had low self-perception of their oral health. The difference shown by the data analysis, in relation to the stability and retention of the prostheses between the upper and lower arches did not influence the values of the GOHAI index.
