A disfunção temporomandibular (DTM) acomete grande parte da população e pode ser associada a fatores sistêmicos, psicológicos, estruturais e/ou funcionais. A DTM abrange uma variedade de problemas clínicos que envolvem a musculatura mastigatória e/ou articulação mandibular, apresentando uma série de características, sendo a principal delas a dor. Os sinais e sintomas da DTM são muito comuns cabendo então ao cirurgião-dentista, através da anamnese, exames clínicos e exames complementares, avaliar a necessidade de tratamento, já que esta patologia poderá influenciar a condição oclusal do paciente. O objetivo do ortodontista no final do tratamento é obter, além da estética, guias funcionais adequadas. E para que isso ocorra a condição oclusal deve ser finalizada em harmonia com a posição musculoesqueletica estável das ATMs. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste na explanação do problema, enfatizando conceitos, causas e consequências, e, a partir daí, ajudar o profissional na escolha do melhor caminho para a solução dessas desordens, através da elaboração de um plano de tratamento adequado.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) affects a large part of the population and may be associated with systemic factors, psychological, structural functional eou. The DTM covers a variety of clinical problems involving the masticatory musculature eou mandibular articulation, featuring a number of features, being the main one the pain. The signs and symptoms of TMD are very common and then the surgeon-dentist, through the anamnesis, clinical and complementary examinations, assessing the need for treatment, since this pathology may influence the occlusal condition of the patient. The goal of the orthodontist at the end of the treatment is to obtain, in addition to aesthetics, appropriate functional tabs. And for this to occur the occlusal condition must be finalized in harmony with the stable musculoesqueletica position of ATMs. The aim of this work consists in the explanation of the problem, emphasizing concepts, causes and consequences, and, from there, help in choosing the best path to the solution of these disorders, through the elaboration of an appropriate treatment plan.
