A atresia transversal da maxila representa um dos problemas mais comumente encontrados pelos ortodontistas e cirurgiões maxilofaciais. A deficiência transversal da maxila possui etiologia multifatorial que inclui obstrução das vias aéreas superiores, hábitos parafuncionais (sucção digital e chupeta), pressionamento lingual, atípico perdas dentárias precoces e assimetrias esqueléticas. Uma das formas comumente utilizadas para reverter a atresia é o tratamento orto-cirúrgico, em pacientes que já atingiram maturidade esquelética, através da expansão rápida da maxila cirurgicamente assistida. A correção da atresia transversal da maxila objetiva a separação dos ossos maxilares na região da sutura palatina mediana. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre a expansão rápida da maxila assistida cirurgicamente.

The transverse maxillary atresia is one of the most commom problems found by orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons. The transverse maxillary deficiency has multifactorial etiology that includes obstruction of the upper airways, parafunctional habits (thumb sucking and pacifier), lingual positioning atypical, early tooth loss and skeletal asymmetries. One of the ways commonly used to reverse the atresia is the ortho-surgical treatment in patients who already have reached the skeletal maturity, through the surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion. The correction of transverse maxillary atresia aims separation of the maxillary bones in the palatine suture region. The objective of this study was to review the literature on the surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion.
