A avaliação dos movimentos mandibulares é uma importante variável clínica que pode indicar a presença ou ausência de condições patológicas da articulação temporomandibular. A avaliação da abertura bucal comumente é realizada pelo registro da distância interincisivo e valores menores que 40 mm são considerados limitação do movimento articular. Outras articulações sinoviais têm sua amplitude de movimento avaliada pelo uso de um goniômetro, que registra a medida do deslocamento articular em ângulos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a mobilidade mandibular em crianças de acordo com as medidas lineares e angulares da abertura bucal, e fatores que podem influenciar na variabilidade destas medidas. Foram avaliadas 54 crianças entre 8 e 12 anos, livres de sintomas de disfunção temporomandibular pelo questionário da Academia Europeia de Desordens Craniomandibulares, registrando-se a distância interincisivo (mm), o deslocamento articular na abertura (graus), a idade, a altura (cm) e o gênero. A medida linear da abertura bucal (MLAB) apresentou média de 48 mm ± 4,7 e correlação positiva e fraca com a altura do indivíduo. A medida angular (MAAB) teve média de 22,47° ± 2,61 e não foi influenciada por idade, altura e gênero.

The evaluation of mandibular movement is an important clinical variable which may indicate the presence or absence of pathological conditions of the temporomandibular joint. The evaluation of mouth opening is commonly done by recording the interincisal distance and values lower than 40 mm are considered limitation of joint movement. Other synovial joints have range of motion assessed by a goniometer, which records the extent of displacement in articular angles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the jaw mobility in children according to the linear and angular measurements of mouth opening, and factors that may influence the variability of these measures. We evaluated 54 children between 8 and 12 years, free of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders by questionnaire of the European Academy of Craniomandibular Disorders, registering interincisal the distance (mm), the joint opening displacement (degrees), age, height (cm) and gender. The linear extent of mouth opening (MLAB) averaged 4.7 ± 48 mm and has a positive correlation with height.
