Cross infection control deserves the same consideration as radiation control, and also the disposal of waste generated during the practice of radiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dentists in the city of Maceió, Alagoas, regarding radiation protection measures, biosecurity and management of solid health waste during radiographic procedures. Ninety-three dentists participated in this research by answering a questionnaire related to the study theme. Of the 93 professionals, 31% (n = 29) were male and 69% (n = 64) were female; 19 had graduated within the last 5 years, 35 had graduated from 6 to 10 years ago, and 39 graduated over 10 years ago. To compare the proportion of professionals by the amount of time they have graduated and the total of these proportions by category, the chi-square test was used, adopting a significance level of 5% (0.05) for all tests. When comparing the time of graduation with clinical work, there was a statistically significant difference. The results showed that 59% of professionals do not perform or were unaware of the need of calibrating their X-ray machines as prescribed by law, however, both recently graduated dentists as well as dentists that have graduated more than ten years, have sound signaling on their devices and have cable release, so this difference was statistically significant; 90% of professionals stated that they use lead aprons for their patients. Regarding items of Ordinance 453, there were significant differences, 72% (n = 67) state using portable darkrooms, 82% (n = 76) processed by the visual method. As for the destination of waste, 82% (n = 76) of the professionals have no disposal protocol. The results show that the respondents are aware of the laws, in spite of noncompliance. Based on these data it is observed that biosecurity is being fulfilled by professionals in the city of Maceió, Alagoas, however, regarding the measures of radiation protection, and disposal of waste generated during radiographic procedures, they are exercising their clinical activities in disagreement to standards.
