O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de sintomas em indivíduos antes do tratamento ortodôntico. Foi aplicado um questionário de triagem simplificado da Academia Americana de Dor Orofacial nas clínicas de ortodontia do Centro de Pesquisa Odontológica São Leopoldo Mandic, em uma amostra de 126 indivíduos. Após os critérios de exclusão, a amostra compreendeu 80 indivíduos divididos em 41 do gênero feminino e 39 masculino, visando avaliar a prevalência de sintomas em pacientes que estavam na fase pré-tratamento ortodôntico. Os resultados permitiram verificar após a aplicação dos testes de Igualdade de Duas proporções e Qui-Quadrado, que não houve diferença estatística em relação ao gênero, a grande maioria dos sujeitos eram sintomáticos com 68,8% (p<0,01); a faixa etária mais prevalente foi de 11 a 20 anos com 67,5% (p<0,01) e a queixa principal foi a dor de cabeça,pescoço e dente com 54,5%, considerado estatisticamente significante em relação aos percentuais dos demais sintomas. Concluiu-se então que existem pacientes que já iniciam o tratamento ortodôntico com alguns sintomas de DTM e por isso o cirurgião-dentista deve ter conhecimento de tal situação.

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of symptoms in individuals before orthodontic treatment. We applied a simplified screening questionnaire of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain clinics in orthodontics Center São Leopoldo Mandic Dental Research, in a sample of 126 individuals. After the exclusion criteria, the sample included 80 subjects divided into 41 female and 39 male, to evaluate the prevalence of symptoms in patients who were in the pre-orthodontic treatment. Results showed after application of testing equality of two proportions and Chi-square, there was no statistical difference in relation to gender, the vast majority of subjects were symptomatic with 68.8% (p <0.01), the most prevalent age group was 11-20 years with 67.5% (p <0.01) and the main complaints were headache, neck and teeth with 54.5% considered statistically significant in relation to the percentage of other symptoms . It was concluded that there are patients who have orthodontic treatment begin with some symptoms of TMD and why the dentist should be aware of this situation.
