The aim of this study was to compare the coadjuvant use of amoxicillin for different time intervals (3 and 7 days) for treatment of acute dentoalveolar abscesses after performing drainage. The acute infectious conditions of 30 patients were investigated, and evaluation of the variables pain, edema, fever, suppuration and trismus (abscesses) were followed up. Each patient received the attack dose (1g of Amoxil®) before the draining procedure, with a maintenance dose of 3 (Group 1) or 7 days (Group 2) of amoxicillin (Amoxil® 500mg) every 8 hours, respectively, with the aim of noting the disappearance of signs and symptoms characteristic of the of systemically compromised condition. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups as regards age and gender (p>0.05); there was no influence of treatments or periods of evaluating the arterial pressure of the individuals (p>0,05); as regards the distances from the tragus to the wing of the nose and labial commissure, and mouth opening, there were no statistically significant differences(ANOVA, p>0,05) between the groups in each period alone, which indicates that there was no influence of the number of days of therapy with the antimicrobial agent; as regards the pain gauged by means of the visual analog scale VAS considering the studied time intervals and periods of measurement, this difference was not significant between the groups (p>0.05). Within the conditions of this study, it was concluded that the number of days of antibiotic therapy had no influence, as there was complete regression of the clinical signs and symptoms of a local and systemic order with up to the three days of using amoxicillin after draining the abscess, and there was no advantage to extending the use of the antimicrobial agent for 7 days.
